Can't you check whether an object has a UID, and fall back on the path? This way AT objects could be tracked by UID so moving them around or renaming works, and non-AT objects would work just like they do currently.
Then you would count object hits...

And not page hits anymore. I am not shure that is a good idea. Different views in the same object would use the same counter. Wouldn't that be confusing?
